Family Holidays

colosseum

I love to go on holidays with my family, but it isn’t always the easiest thing to do in the world with so many small things to think about. The point is also that no two families are ever the same, so each one needs to think of some very specific things like travel arrangements and how to get everyone into the one place. This is never easy, but here are some great holiday options for the family traveler.

Skiing

This is a great option for families because you can all enjoy it together, without really having to do too much in terms of owning all the equipment. You can simply get your family there and then hire everything that you need. Skiing is a great way to keep everyone in the family active on their holiday and it is a great way to earn some amazing food afterwards!

Camping

This is always a good option because you don’t usually need to think about complicated logistics when it comes to your family, you can simply enjoy the nature that is probably not so far away from where you live or that is reasonably close. I always enjoy camping too because there is always a lot to do and everyone can go and do separate things if they like too. The variety is something that every family will enjoy and teaching them to appreciate nature is an important lesson too.

Cities

Dubai

This is a year round warm experience that I have always enjoyed and the tropical desert climate makes it the ultimate playground for adults and children alike. This is especially true with the huge number of theme parks like Legoland, Motiongate and Bollywood Dubai. Everyone can also enjoy the pool all year round, so it can either be a perfect summer holiday destination with the family or one to escape the cold winters.

Rome

Rome is just the city with a huge wow factor that can impress even the most picky children. It is in essence a modern city built in between the ruins of a very ancient one, which makes it one of the most unique and exciting places in the entire world. You will surely inspire your child with the amazing culture and history, as well as the amazing food. This is something that your family will love so much, especially the pizza and gelato. I am getting hungry just thinking about it.

What’s the Craic in Krakow?

From the charming cobblestone streets of the Old City to the buzzing nightlife, it’s no surprise that Krakow is a Holiday Taxis favourite and is fast becoming one of Europe’s new darling hotspots. Located at the base of the Carpathian Mountains, Poland’s second largest city is home to 1.4 million residents. The city is divided into 18 districts, each offering up their own unique flavour and vibe. With so much to see and do in the area, it can be tough to know how to plan your trip. We reveal some of the must-see attractions, so you can enjoy the craic in Krakow.

Before departing on your trip, it’s worth knowing a little about the history of this area. Krakow is actually one of the oldest cities in Poland, and evidence shows it has settlements dating back to 20000 BC. Having been through numerous wars, revolutions, and communist eras, Krakow certainly has a rich history which is reflected in its architecture and many museums.

The Historic Old Town

One of the most visited tourist destinations is the Old Town district. Known as Krakow’s historic centre, this is the area that is home to a list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The pretty streets are perfect for exploring on foot, so take a map and wander around to marvel at the majestic buildings and sculptures.

Shopping Sprees

The Old Town is also excellent for shopping, and the perfect place to pick up souvenirs for friends and family back home. In the middle of the Old City you’ll find Rynek Główny, which houses an enormous market where you can buy traditional handicrafts such as amber jewellery, sheepskin rugs and artworks.

Local Food

Another excellent thing about Krakow is the food. Krakow cuisine draws its influences from Hungary as well as Central and Eastern Europe. Eating times are often different to those in Western Europe. Polish people typically have a very large breakfast and then lunch later on in the day between 3 to 4 pm and a light dinner at 9p,. For this reason do as the locals and devour a breakfast of champions! You must try the delicious Polish dumplings, which are much like ravioli and come with a variety of fillings.

Lively Nightlife

Nightlife is also excellent here, and certainly rivals some of the other European hotspots. There are over 300 places to eat or drink within the Old Town district alone. Head towards the Vistula River for streets that are lined full of cafes, and bars. One of the best ways to experience all the nightlife that Krakow has to offer is to join in a pub crawl. Many bars are actually hidden down side streets or in basements, so bar crawls provide the best way to see these hidden watering holes.

Much like the rest of Poland, staying here is very safe but obvious rules apply to leaving valuables out and avoiding scams. Overall, Krakow has something for all tastes and budgets. Enjoy your trip!

Heading To Antarctica

antarctica 4

There is probably no destination on earth that can match Antarctica in term of its uniqueness as a holiday destination. If you asked 100, 200 or even 300 people on the street, how many of them would actually have been to this magical place? The answer is most likely not many at all, and perhaps it is the ultimate bragging right. I think I first heard about the place in an Antarctica school project, but I never thought I would go there and now here is my short guide to all the things that Antarctica has to offer. Read on to find out more.

My experience

You will no doubt be heading to one of the most untouched parts of the planet and for me this meant seeing things that were so stunning and serene. I took a cruise ship from Ushaia in Argentina to Antarctica, this was well worth it and I have countless memories and thousands of photos that will help me to remember everything that I saw there. Honestly this was not a budget travel experience, but I need to say that it was worth every single cent that I paid to get there. I always have the feeling now that my attitude towards holidays will never be the same, as I am always comparing everything to Antarctica.

Follow history

One of the standout features of Antarctica is how isolated and untouched it is and I am very fascinated by the history is Antarctic explorers who risked their lives simply to reach the South Pole first! The conditions they endured and the feeling of isolation is something that I could identify with when I was there. There is no other feeling than thinking about the hardships of Mawson or Shackleton on their respective journeys to the South Pole.

Iceberg

Scenery

The scenery is as rewarding as the history of the place, you are truly seeing things that only a very lucky few people get to see. It brings me back to the question of how many people you could ask on the street if they have ever been to Antarctica and the answer would be very few, if any. My most favourite memories were the icebergs and their sheer size. It is so funny that people use the expression the tip of the iceberg, because they are so large underneath. Of these people very few have seen a real iceberg, which makes it an ironic phrase to use.

penguin cruise

Wildlife

The wildlife is something to marvel at, particularly with many animals that are living in perhaps the harshest climate on earth. It really makes me wonder how these animals evolved and came to live in such a place. The Emperor penguins for me were definitely a highlight and they are actually the largest species of penguins and don’t ever leave the area! I also got the chance to see seals, blue whales and so many types of birds and it was truly amazing.

Comments Off on Cool Budapest

Cool Budapest

The Holiday Taxis team love Budapest and here share some of their passion for this wonderful cultural city.

Visitors, the cool young as well as others, are genuinely impressed by the architecture of Budapest, a city made up of Buda on the north side of the river Danube and Pest on the south. The shining white Parliament building, in Pest, was built during the Austro-Hungarian period when money was no object and was inspired by the Houses of Parliament in London. The disney-like Fisherman’s Bastion, in the castle district on the Buda side, is a white terrace with seven towers, each representing a Maygar tribe. Behind it is the gothic Saint Matthias church which became a mosque during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries before becoming a church again. Dohany Street synagogue is one of Europe’s largest and the terrible historical events which affected the Budapest Jews are commemorated by a beautiful sculpture of shoes on the Danube prom.

The Romans loved the springs in the area, caused by a fault line, and built their regional capital of Pannonia Inferior, Aquincum, so as to enjoy them. Later these 120 springs were developed into the spas and thermal baths for which Budapest is really famous. Octogenarians, standing around floating chessboards, can be seen during the day in the neo-Baroque splendour of the Szechenyi baths but, at night, something really cool happens. This is the so-called Sparty (spa and party) beloved of Interrailers and others. Organized by the Cinetrip company, they basically consist of a rave in a spa with famous DJs playing trance, trip hop, hip hop, electro and funk music, and a brilliant laser light display. There is, of course, copious amounts of alcohol. The clientele is mostly under 30 and there are many more men than women though all-male stag parties are prohibited. The Sparty is more gentle in its earlier hours before intoxication changes the atmosphere, making the Sparty more fun or more threatening depending on your viewpoint. Security, though, is good.

Budapest has so many other unique places and events. The ruin bars or kerts are really cool. They are set up in empty buildings and furnished and decorated by local artists often using what they can find in the street. In August Budapest hosts the enormous Sziget festival, a large outdoor rock festival attended by in excess of 400,000 people. By contrast, Hungarian folk dances are also popular and there is also plenty of classical music including opera. Other events include Budapest Pride and the Budapest Fringe Festival. There are also numerous museums and art galleries including the unusual Budapest Pinball Machine museum and the Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum. Being centred on the border between eastern and western Europe much of the food is an unusual fusion of eastern and western European fare. There are also the standard outlets providing food from many countries and alot of places to stay that won’t break the bank. These, together with cheap flights, and Interrail, make Budapest a place that is enjoyed by large numbers of young people looking for something cool.

Comments Off on GORILLA TRACKING IN RWANDA VS UGANDA.

GORILLA TRACKING IN RWANDA VS UGANDA.

There is currently estimated less than 800 mountain gorillas in the world and these are found in the Virunga mountain ranges shared by Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, with half of the gorillas living in Bwindi impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

The gorillas are the most amazing primates in the world with large body mass and share 98% genes with humans making them the closest cousins to the humans. The gorillas do most of the things humans do including having sex for pleasure.

The mountain gorillas feed on leaves, roots, stems, fruits, ants, flowers, snails and grubs. The food is available throughout the year in these mountains as it hardly gets dry due to the rains in those highlands.

The mountain gorillas in these three countries have been habituated for human tracking so they do not pose danger to human beings. However, due to constant instabilities in DR Congo, gorilla safaris are more populary done in Rwanda and Uganda in Volcanoes National Park and Bwindi impenetrable National park respectively. The other park in Uganda where gorillas are tracked in Uganda is Mgahinga National park.

In both destinations, gorilla tracking rules and regulations are the same and the major aim is conserving these endangered species of the gorillas. Tracking involves paying for the gorilla permit to the respective authorities and then you will be accompanied with trained ranger guides into the jungle to track the gorillas. One hour is allowed to stay with the gorillas in both destinations and human contact with the gorillas is avoided to prevent any contamination of the gorillas with human diseases.

With the general information about the gorilla tracking, there is some differences between the gorilla tracking in the two countries which range from cost, location, logistics, distance, terrain.

We provide the differences here below;

Rwanda Gorilla tracking Highlights

Volcanoes National Park, which is Rwanda’s home for the Mountain Gorillas has ten habituated gorilla groups and are all in the same location with the same briefing point. This makes it easier to secure same gorilla permit and see the gorillas without specifying which location of the park you want to see the gorillas from.

Being the most tourist attraction Rwanda has, a gorilla safari in Rwanda is so organized with experienced guides, porters, briefing point which has other entertainments. All effort has been put in this section of the tourist attraction making it more fun and amazing.

The travel time from Kigali capital where the international airport is to Volcanoes National park  where gorilla tracking takes place is just 2.5 hours drive on a smooth and paved road all the way from Kigali to the park headquarters. This makes it very accessible and comfortable visiting the park in a short time.

In terms of gorilla encounter, it is easier to see gorillas in Rwanda due to the vegetation cover which is not thick and this aids in better photography and gorilla watching. This is a great opportunity for photographers to have clear shots of the gorillas in their natural wild.

Concerning the general terrain of park, Volcanoes National Park is less steep compared to the other gorilla parks with some gorilla families located far and others near which offers opportunity for different kinds of people with different fitness level to be allocated the gorilla groups of their capability. For less fit trackers, they are allocated the less strenuous gorilla groups to enable them track with ease. The gorilla groups are classified in terms of low, medium and high level.

However, despite the better side of Rwanda’s gorilla tracking, it has some lows and some of these are as below;

For someone who wish to see more than the gorillas, there is less attractions to offer in Rwanda If you need to have a traditional African safari experience.  Rwanda has only one wildlife safari park Akagera National Park which does not have cats. The other park Nyungwe National park which has chimpanzees and Colobus Monkeys have less to offer.

It is very costly in Rwanda due to the cost of the gorilla permit and the accommodations which makes it very expensive to spend much yet in a few days. However, Africa Tours Adventure design packages that are tailor made to suite the budget of traveler without feeling the price.

For someone who love adventure, gorilla tracking in Rwanda offers less challenge which reduces the excitement and one misses the true experience of Africa. The roads are paved; the terrain is less challenging making it very easy to see the gorillas without any major challenge. This is not always favored by the people who like taking on challenges.

On the other hand, Uganda as another gorilla tracking destination has positives and some are highlighted below;

Uganda has more gorilla families with 12 gorilla groups habituated for gorilla tracking.  Almost hal of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Besides gorilla tracking, there is gorilla habituation experience where trackers spend four hours with the gorillas against one hour spend with the gorillas while on gorilla tracking.

It is cheaper visit gorillas in Uganda in terms of gorilla tracking permit fees and accommodations around the Bwindi area. The gorilla permit in Uganda costs USD600 and in low season months of April, May and November, the permits are discounted to USD450 per permit.

Tracking gorillas in Uganda is more adventurous for trackers who like taking up challenge as the tracking involves strenuous hiking and penetration through the lush vegetation. This gives value for the effort put in preparing to come for a gorilla tracking adventure.

For someone who want to see more than the gorillas, Uganda as a destination offers more to see in terms of other attractions which includes the African Big Five, mountains, chimpanzees, cultural tours among others.  Bwindi National Park itself  is a UNESCO world heritage site, in their words, a “conservation frontline as an isolated forest of outstanding biological richness.”

However, just like there is strong point for Uganda gorilla tracking, there is some lows which include the following;

Bwindi impenetrable national park is not easily accessible due to poor road infrastructure and distance from the major airports. It is ten hours drive from Entebbe airport , the only international airport in Uganda and it is five hours drive from Kigali to Bwindi impenetrable national park in case one chose to arrive through Kigali-Rwanda.

The forest as it is called impenetrable is not just a name! The forest is covered by thick forest and the terrain is a bit challenging. This makes gorilla tracking a bit strenuous and for less adventurous trackers, it is a disadvantage. This also gives bad environment for photography as the gorillas keep in the shrubs making it difficult for clear shots.

Bwindi impenetrable Forest national park is made up of three sectors; Buhoma sector, Ruhija sector, Rushaga sector with each sector having own gorilla groups. This makes it difficult in choosing which sector to visit when one is buying the gorilla tracking permit.

Many people always ask a question of whether to visit Rwanda or Uganda, but this article helps to give insights on the two parks and one can easily take a decision on where to enjoy the memorable gorilla tracking from.

Visit Africa Tours Adventure for a tailor made gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. This is competent local travel agent based in Rwanda and Uganda
